The National Artist Teacher Fellowship was awarded to arts educators from public arts high schools, Title 1 high schools, or Title1 middle schools. Up to twenty awards of $7,000 were bestowed to arts educators yearly to fulfill their fellowship process. Proposals not considered for the National Artist Teacher Fellowship are participation in educational conferences, art therapy, development of pedagogy, academic research, graduate study, or curriculum building.

National Artist Teacher Fellowship criteria are:

​

• Be an arts educator assigned on faculty at a public arts high school, Title 1 high school or Title 1 middle school

• Be minimally in their fifth year of teaching, and

• Must demonstrate excellence as both an artist and arts educator
